North Branch Little Conemaugh RiverGeneral Description
The Little Conemaugh River is 29 miles long and drains 188 square miles. Its headwaters
and the North Branch are fisheries. The North Branch of the Little Conemaugh
River runs from Wilmore Dam to the main branch of the Little Conemaugh. The stream
is located off Route 160 on Evergreen Road in Wilmore, and near Route 53 above Summerhill.
The stream is of medium size, containing many runs and pools. Convenient turn
off areas near the stream make the waterway easily accessible over much of its
length. The exception is the 1.5 mile section from the dam to Route 160, which is
enclosed by an old iron gate fence. The secluded nature of this walk-in-only area
is especially worthwhile for anglers.
The North Branch contains a major population of brown and rainbow trout with
a smaller population of brook trout. The stream is stocked by the Fish & Boat
Commission with brown and rainbow trout, but does not contain a large number
of wild trout.
The South Fork to Johnstown section of the Little Conemaugh features a 10.2 mile
section of Class II whitewater good for beginners looking to gain some experience.
The
Lilly to Portage section of the Little Conemaugh River is a 5.6 mile stretch
of Class III whitewater perfect for more experienced river runners. Unless accompanied
by an experienced paddler, this section is not recommended for beginners.
