Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site
Constructed in the early 1830's the Allegheny Portage Railroad operated from 1834-1854 between Hollidaysburg and Johnstown a distance of 36 miles, as part of the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal. An ingenious system of incline planes and levels carried passengers and freight over the rugged Allegheny Mountains between the two towns.
