Majestic mountain scenery surrounds rural country roads, farmlands, and mysterious mountainous ridges. The majestic aura of this area and the magical feeling you'll have when you cycle this route is why we call this the Magical Mountain Mystery Tour. Beginning in delightful Somerset, Pennsylvania and continuing through the rural Borough of Berlin which claim to fame is its famous stone chimneys and maple sugar production. The cyclist enjoys a somewhat challenging and exciting ride, which has two 1.5 mile climbs, but don't worry, what goes up must come down.
Length: 55.1 miles
Terrain: Rolling with some hills. Higher traffic volumes in Somerset and Berlin Boroughs. Posted speeds are generally 35 mph to 40 mph, except for one section of SR 31 which the posted speed limit is 55 mph. Watch for heavy coal truck traffic on SR 160.
Pavement quality: Pavement conditions are generally excellent; however, most roads do not have paved shoulders. Watch out for a 1/2 mile section of SR 1003 which is an unpaved gravel roadway.
Climbs: 1st climb coming out of Somerset Borough on SR 31, approximate 11% grade for 1-1/2 miles.
2nd climb SR 2019, a 1/2 mile climb at the start of this segment, 24.5 miles into the tour.
3rd climb SR 2023, a 14% grade encountered 37 miles into the tour. Total climb length 1-3/4 miles.
